How does the ReciApp work?

The ReciApp mobile application is a technological tool that connects grassroots recyclers with the rest of society, strengthening inclusive recycling and the circular economy.

- It connects citizens, the private sector, municipalities, and the public sector with grassroots recyclers.
- It enables collaborative mapping and allows users to register grassroots recyclers in their neighborhood for free, helping them appear in a database where more people can contact them.
- It offers the opportunity to view a map of nearby recyclers or recycling stations where you can deliver recyclable materials.
- For every activity you perform in the ReciApp, you earn points that you can redeem for prizes at any of our partner businesses.

It is important to emphasize that at ReciVeci, we do not profit from the work of grassroots recyclers; rather, we strive to ensure that more material reaches their hands directly, cleanly, and sorted, without them having to sift through trash.

What recycling options does the ReciApp offer?

The ReciApp mainly provides two options for delivering materials: direct delivery to grassroots recyclers or drop-off at one of our recycling stations.

What materials can be recycled through the ReciApp?

We recycle plastic, Tetra Pak® containers, cardboard, paper, metal, glass, and scrap. Please wash these materials before handing them over to your grassroots recycler. Place them in bags and, if possible, separate them by type of material. Remember that recyclers work with their hands, and we can make their jobs easier with these small actions, helping to prevent accidents or illnesses.

What benefits do I get from using the ReciApp?

The ReciApp is the first technological and social tool for inclusive recycling that features a gamification system. For every action or delivery recorded, you earn points that can be redeemed for prizes at any of our partner businesses, while also strengthening the work of grassroots recyclers.

What does collaborative mapping mean, and how does it work in the ReciApp?

At ReciVeci, we believe in recycling while building community. That’s why we designed the ReciApp as a tool for citizens to autonomously register grassroots recyclers, allowing them to use it as a connection tool with people interested in delivering recyclable materials.

How to register a grassroots recycler?

The term “grassroots recycler” refers to workers (formal or informal) in the recycling value chain who make a living by selecting, collecting, and marketing recyclable solid waste. To register a grassroots recycler in the ReciApp, follow these steps:

- Go out into your neighborhood and meet grassroots recyclers. Establish a human and trustworthy contact with them; you wouldn’t believe how much you can help each other!
- Explain how registering in this application can help them receive materials directly from more people. If they agree to be part of it, enter their information in the “Register a recycler” section found in the main menu of the ReciApp.
- Visit the “Guide to being a ReciVeci” section, where we explain how to approach and build a connection with grassroots recyclers.
- That’s it! Now more people will be able to contact them, and you have contributed to recycling in the community.

What should I do if my grassroots recycler doesn’t answer the phone?

The grassroots recycling sector is informal, and often, grassroots recyclers do not answer the phone right away or respond very late. It’s important to understand that their relationship with technology is different, and many of them are elderly. Here are some recommendations for contacting them if they do not answer:

- Message them in advance to coordinate the delivery.
- Go outside your house before the garbage truck comes and check if they are collecting materials in the area.
- When you see them on the street, coordinate the next delivery.
- Remember that registering them in the ReciApp can help other people contact them as well. If they agree to be part of it and give you their information, register them in the app.

Why continue using the ReciApp if I already have the contact of a grassroots recycler?

With the ReciApp, you have the chance to earn rewards as you accumulate points for delivering materials to recyclers or recycling stations. Additionally, this app allows you to quantify the positive social and environmental impact you are creating through your material contributions. This enables you to track the reduction of your carbon footprint (CO2-eq) and measure how many emissions you are helping to avoid.

What is a recycling station?

Recycling stations are ReciVeci locations situated in various parts of the city where you can drop off your recyclable materials. Use the ReciApp to find the nearest recycling station on the map. When you arrive, scan the QR code, take a photo of the materials you are bringing, and register your delivery. Remember, for every action you take within the app, you accumulate points that you can later redeem for rewards in ReciNegocios affiliated with ReciVeci.

What is a ReciNegocios?

These are businesses or allied enterprises of ReciVeci where you can obtain rewards or discounts for recycling through the ReciApp.

How can I redeem points for prizes?

To generate your coupon, go to the main section of the app. There, choose the option “Redeem points”. Select the category, the ReciNegocio, and the prize you want, then generate your coupon. Each coupon will have instructions on how to redeem it at the corresponding ReciNegocio. Don’t forget to tag us on your social media when you receive your prize! This motivates more people to recycle in the community.

After making my delivery, how long does it take to register?

Once you make the delivery, the ReciVeci team will verify in the system that everything is correct and can be processed. This may take between two and three days to be reflected in the app.

How do you ensure that the materials we deliver are actually recycled?

The materials recovered by grassroots recyclers are subsequently sold mainly to transforming companies. By doing this, these materials regain a route in the recycling chains and production processes. Therefore, this material does have market value and a place in mitigating climate change.

Does ReciVeci profit from the work of grassroots recyclers?

At ReciVeci, we do not profit from the work of grassroots recyclers, nor are we their competitors. In fact, we are proud to have created an ecosystem that connects grassroots recyclers with the rest of society (citizens, private companies, public sector, etc.). We achieve this through technological and social innovation with the ReciApp and the traceability platform ReCircular.

Our business focus is currently on the private sector, creating partnerships between companies seeking to implement sustainable recycling and return systems, and grassroots recyclers who receive the recovered materials clean, dry, and sorted. They can then sell these materials without having to sift through waste in unhealthy and precarious conditions. The sale of the materials is 100% for them, which also contributes to improving their living conditions.

Why do we work with mass consumption companies at ReciVeci?

Our mission is to promote the proper management of recyclable-returnable solid waste with all sectors of society and its progressive reduction, while improving the living and working conditions of thousands of grassroots recyclers. Starting from a focus on creative solutions and leveraging our technical background, we discovered that to create changes with a real positive impact that transcend both the current waste management landscape and the work of grassroots recyclers, we needed to form partnerships with companies that mass-produce potentially recyclable-returnable packaging and containers.

It is important to emphasize that we only work on campaigns when we see a genuine intention and openness from the company to make internal modifications that adapt to sustainable protocols and a desire to continue growing in that direction.
