What are grassroots recyclers and what is inclusive recycling?
Grassroots recyclers make a living by collecting, trading, and reusing recyclable solid waste. Promoting inclusive recycling means recognizing the economic, social, and environmental value in their work.
Those who work as grassroots recyclers
Collect, recover, transform, sell, and reuse solid waste. They depend on this trade (and likely many of their family members do as well), generating income from selling this material. In Ecuador, 70% are women.
I am María, and I started working in grassroots recycling at the age of 40 with some family members. Every week, I travel through the city, sorting what you throw away, which is my job. Inclusive recycling recognizes the role of grassroots recyclers in the recycling chain. It finds economic, social, environmental, political, and cultural value in this trade and facilitates their inclusion and fair compensation in new waste management models.
About us
Ecuador's first inclusive recycling startup led by three women.
ReciVeci began as a voluntary citizen initiative, led by a group of passionate professionals from various fields. We aimed to change the reality for thousands of grassroots recyclers in Ecuador.
Now we are a social enterprise with the goal of connecting grassroots recyclers with citizens and companies to recover as much recyclable material as possible and deliver it directly to those who recycle, preventing them from having to sift through garbage bags. We want to build a society that learns to recycle, and we know your participation is essential to achieve this.
