A New Roof for the Grassroots Recyclers Association Collection Center “For a Better Future”

10/2024

Yesterday, a new roof was officially delivered to the Collection Center of the Grassroots Recyclers Association “For A Better Future”, thanks to the joint work between The Coca-Cola Company Ecuador and ReciVeci.

Context:

In 2022, Ecuador experienced a very special event: the FIFA Trophy Tour world cup, an event led by the Coca-Cola Company. For the edition held in Quito, ReciVeci was participating in the management of recyclable waste. In addition to this event, one of the pillars of the Trophy Tour was to leave a legacy that means a social and environmental impact in each of the cities visited, and in this regard, through working together with ReciVeci, it was determined that the legacy for Ecuador is destined for basic waste pickers in the city of Quito, framed in the strategy A World Without Coca-Cola Waste.

This is how ReciVeci helped to identify what were the most urgent needs of several grassroots groups and associations of waste pickers to carry out their work. Some groups need work tools such as digital scales, others infrastructure such as roofs in their collection center. During a visit carried out in May 2023, the waste pickers of the Asoc. For A Better Future, they said that the main need is to install a roof in the area where they carry out the classification of recyclable materials. This is to have a better quality and quantity of the recyclable material they classify and store, and to work in a more efficient and dignified way since they are not exposed to the sun and rain during the sorting activity.

Finally, one of the legacies of the Trophy Tour was this, a new roof for the Asoc collection center. For A Better Future. Yesterday, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, we were at the center to officially inaugurate this new phase of the Center.

From ReciVeci, we would like to especially thank Paola Palacios Gutierrez of the Communications and Sustainability area for Ecuador and Peru in The Coca-Cola Company, for choosing recycling with basic recyclers and recyclers as an action aligned with their sustainability plans.

In addition, we want to thank María Paz Verdesoto of Arca Continental Ecuador for having accompanied us at the event and, of course, the members of the Association “For a Better Future”, especially the Grassroots Recycler Elvia Endara.

This change of cover is the result of the fact that working together between the different actors in the recycling chain translates into improvements in working and living conditions for basic waste pickers, and therefore, in steps that we take as companies, as individuals and society, towards the much needed circular economy.
