Ecuador advances in the development of the National Plan for the Reduction of Plastic Waste, with a focus on the protection of marine ecosystems

04/2025

As part of a national effort to combat plastic pollution, since the beginning of 2024, a consultancy led by ReciVeci®, Mingas por el Mar and the Manzano Law Firm has been carried out to create the National Plan for the Reduction of Plastic Waste in Ecuador (PNRRP). This project, which also includes a focus on the protection of marine ecosystems, is promoted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Ecuador), the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE) and is aligned with the objectives of the Global Platform for Action on Plastics (GPAP).

As part of the process, three rounds of workshops were held with key players in the sector. The first round took place on September 10 and 12, 2024 in Quito and Guayaquil, where a consultative group and representatives from various sectors worked to build a common vision for the National Plan for the Reduction of Plastic Waste, defining the desired future for plastic management in the country. Later, in the second round, held on November 12 and 14 in the same cities, progress was made in the definition of goals and key indicators to measure the impact of the plan, consolidating a comprehensive approach that promotes the circular economy and sustainability.

Finally, the third and final round of workshops was held on February 18 and 20, 2025 in Quito and Guayaquil, respectively. In this phase, the strategic components of the plan were presented and validated, allowing participants to provide key feedback for strengthening before the final phase of systematization and preparation of the final document.

In total, more than 100 people participated in these working days, dedicating four hours to each workshop. The call brought together representatives from industry, academia, social organizations and other sectors, reflecting the diversity of actors committed to this cause.

The Plan seeks to significantly reduce the generation of plastic waste in the country through better waste management and the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Developed in collaboration with companies, institutions and technical experts, this effort represents a key step in promoting responsible and sustainable practices in Ecuador in the face of the plastic pollution crisis.
