The Center-North region of Ecuador celebrates the revival of glass recycling with the opening of the O-I Cridesa glass HUB, managed by ReciVeci. O-I Cridesa is the company that processes glass in the country and is located in Guayaquil; this HUB will then serve as a collection center for the company in Quito where glass will be purchased in bulk and retail from basic recyclers, intermediaries and the general public as if it were being sold directly in Guayaquil.
Context of glass in the Center-North region of Ecuador:
Until recently, glass recovery in the region was practically paralyzed due to the difficulties faced by basic recyclers in getting glass to Guayaquil. The logistics of recovering, storing, transporting and selling glass were complicated by the logistics involved and this resulted in large quantities of glass being discarded, in addition to a lower income for those working in basic recycling.
Benefits for basic waste pickers and citizens:
Grassroots recyclers, intermediaries and the general public will now be able to bring their recovered glass to the HUB and sell it. In addition, since the opening of this glass collection center in Quito, four jobs have also been opened, two of which are for basic women recyclers who work as operators. They are Verónica Pulupa and Blanca Pulupa, both basic recyclers and members of the Grassroots Recyclers Association “Smile”; they will be responsible for receiving, helping to unload, classify and coordinate everything related to glass within the HUB.
The O-I Cridesa glass HUB managed by ReciVeci is a dream come true. This initiative demonstrates that waste management with grassroots recyclers is a viable path to improving society and the environment.
What glass is recycled in the HUB?
We remind citizens, intermediaries and basic recyclers that we will only receive glass bottles and containers for beverages and food. We do not receive windshield glass or fiberglass.
