On April 3rd, ECOCEGAM Quitumbe opened, a new space dedicated to environmental management and the strengthening of inclusive recycling in the south of Quito. This center, promoted by the Mayor's Office of Quito and Emgirs EP, will directly benefit more than 400,000 inhabitants of the area and 40 grassroots recycling families.
ReciVeci was present as an allied organization that promotes inclusive recycling in Quito, accompanying this important milestone promoted by the Mayor's Office, Emgirs EP and the Quitumbe Waste Pickers Association (ASO Quiumbe), made up of 26 grassroots recyclers, who have led this process from the territory.
The new center, located between Avenida Cóndor Ñan and Nicolás Cevallos, has an infrastructure of more than 4,000 square meters for the classification, storage and sale of recyclable materials. In addition, it includes spaces for educational workshops, composting areas and a community garden, which will allow citizens to be linked to sustainable practices from a pedagogical perspective.
This ECOCEGAM will directly benefit more than 400,000 people in the sector and 40 recycling families who work in this area. Its implementation is part of the Comprehensive Waste and Solid Waste Management Plan 2022—2032, which seeks to expand and consolidate a network of environmental management and education centers in the Metropolitan District of Quito.
From ReciveCI®, the joint work between the Quitumbe Waste Pickers Association, the Municipality and Emgirs EP is recognized and commended, and the launch of a space that dignifies the work of those who have historically supported the recycling chain is valued. Initiatives like this are key to moving towards a fairer, participatory waste management model with a circular economy approach.
