McDonald's and Essity join forces in an innovative project in Ecuador, with the support of ReciVeci

10/2024

At an event held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Essity headquarters in Lasso, Latacunga, companies McDonald's and Essity signed an agreement Where do they mark the beginning of the recycling project of polyboard cups at McDonald's stores, to be recovered and sold by Basic Recyclers, and then returned to Essity's production chains to be transformed into new products.

Several people who have been key in the creation of this project attended the event, including Cecilia Villa, in charge of Grupo Familia Operations, and who argued that this project has the goal of collecting 24 Tons of polyboard material recyclable In a year, and with this eliminate a total of 100 tons of CO2-eq.

Another aspect that we celebrate at ReciVeci is the opening of these companies to link these projects with the work of Basic Recyclers, a vulnerable sector that will directly benefit from this project, receiving the material in a direct, clean, dry and classified way, while obtaining 100% of the profits from its sale.

Once collected and sold, these polyboard cups will be returned to the Essity production chains, which through Grupo Familia, Tork, will use this material to manufacture new paper products, thus closing the cycle of recycling the material in a real way.

José Uribe, Head of Sustainability at Essity, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “We are proud to be part of a project that not only benefits the environment, but also contributes to the circular economy and to the livelihood of many families.”

Paola Caicedo, Communications Manager at McDonald's, spoke about the company's commitment to continue growing in terms of sustainability: “Our goal for 2025 is to recycle 100% of the recyclable materials in our premises. This partnership with ReciVeci and Essity brings us even closer to achieving that goal.”

At ReciVeci, we once again express our joy that mass consumer companies are willing to make real changes internally, and that they allow us to take steps towards true sustainability. In the same way, we hope that this alliance will set a precedent in the country and serve as an inspiring example for future large scale sustainability projects with more companies that want to start moving in this direction.
