From November 2022 to February 2023, together with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, municipalities, and ReciVeci, comprehensive solid waste management systems were designed in two areas of Ecuador: Pampanal de Bolívar, a community located in the Eloy Alfaro canton in Esmeraldas and in the city of Lago Agrio, Sucumbíos.
ReciVeci focused on implementing strategies to improve solid waste management and this involved implementing an education plan through workshops on the importance of reducing plastic consumption, how to properly classify and separate waste in homes, as well as establishing collection and recycling points in strategic places. Several workshops and recreational activities were held, involving a total of 300 participants between the two locations.
In Pampanal de Bolívar, a 'plogging' activity was carried out in which 86 boys and girls from migrant and local families participated. This consisted of a walk that collected about 500 kg of solid waste, which was separated and taken to the corresponding recycling centers.
For its part, in Lago Agrio, a recycling event was organized with the support of the UNHCR, the GAD. During the process, approximately 550 kg of recyclable material, such as paper, cardboard, plastic and glass, were recovered.
In addition, the importance of citizen participation in the proper management of waste was emphasized, and participants were encouraged to share the knowledge acquired in their communities.
These activities are part of a joint effort between international cooperation organizations, civilians and communities to promote sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. It is hoped that initiatives such as these will contribute to raising awareness of the importance of caring for our planet and to promote a culture of respect and responsibility for the environment and the effect of climate change.
