Tetra Pak® and ReciVeci come together to make the work of basic recyclers visible

10/2024

The basic waste pickers of the Association of Environmental Managers of the Metropolitan District of Quito - CEGAM La Delicia, were part of a morning of fun, companionship and recognition, for the work they do every day for our city and for the environment, with the event “Women, Art and Recycling” organized by Tetra Pak® and ReciVeci.

In the context of Women's Day and the commemoration of Waste Picker's Day, the companies were responsible for making visible and recognizing the value generated by women recyclers within society, through a celebration event that aimed to promote inclusive recycling, through art and the intervention of the La Delicia workspace, where a mural was painted with the participation of urban artists. In addition, they had the opportunity to access hairdressing, manicure, medical examinations and dental checkups for the association's recyclers.

For Hedda Naranjo, Tetra Pak® Sustainability Manager in Ecuador, this event “crystallizes the company's commitment to sustainability by adding actions that promote the work of waste pickers, as they are a fundamental part of our value chain and of the process of ensuring a sustainable future for all people”.

The activity, with the participation of the Ministry of Environment, EMGIRS, EMASEO and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition, was inspired by the Pimp my Carroza festival, created in Brazil under the leadership of urban artist Mundano and whose main objective was to make visible the work of grassroots recyclers through art. ReciVeci has carried out this activity before, with Quito being one of the 58 cities worldwide to replicate it.

In this edition of the event, Tetra Pak® joins the important mission of valuing the work of basic recyclers, joining forces with ReciVeci to work to raise awareness, recognition and dignify this profession. The ongoing support that Tetra Pak® provides to more than 6,500 recyclers nationwide includes the delivery of safety equipment, permanent training, the articulation of incentive programs, and investment in machinery that allows their tasks to be automated, in order to enhance their work and increase their quality of life.

This joint work of ReciVeci and Tetra Pak® helps create initiatives aimed at consolidating inclusive recycling across the country and reaffirms the commitment of the two companies to the circular economy and the adoption of responsible environmental practices.
