In short, recycling promotes care for the environment and has become an action that is not only beneficial, but also extremely necessary: the adequate management of waste and waste has a positive impact on the environment and appears as a priority issue for private and public management.
Although the effects are clearly positive, the recycling chain hides realities that urgently need to be addressed: the work of basic waste pickers, without a schedule, without a date, with compensation that often does not reach the basic salary, is the soul of this noble action that benefits cities and, in general, the planet. According to official figures, 99% of these workers are not affiliated with Social Security, in addition to carrying out their activities in precarious and complex conditions.
Since June 2022, 1.2 tons of recyclable waste have been recovered in Guayaquil for the benefit of at least 4,000 recyclers. On the other hand, Cuenca is an environmentally responsible city, since it has always been leading projects and initiatives in favor of caring for the environment, becoming a national reference: there, 52% of households classify waste at the source, and around 6% is recycled on a city scale (95% of this figure is classified thanks to the work of basic recyclers).
